Providing the Open Media Platform (next steps?)

These are random notes per various conversations w/ Tony and the Open Media crew....

Stations want a one-stop shop.
Great opportunity for creating a "package" where you offer a flat-fee "project management" service where, for however many tens of thousands of dollars, you agree to help them set up their drupal site, locate and manage any drupal talent in their area, train them to use it, and manage the process of installing the Open Media Project in their environment.

In some cases, you'd contract with us to do work, while in others, you'd contract with some contractors in their location, or do it yourself. In many cases, the money and the willingness is there, they just don't know how to navigate it yet.

For example, offer a two-phased contract that leverages his capital equipment budget, which would cover the costs.

Phase 1: for a few thousand dollars, assemble screencasts, documentation, and other training materials to help clients understand the Open Media Project (and Drupal), with some analysis of what aspects of it could be useful in his environment. The final product is a detailed plan, budget, and timeline for implementation of the Open Media Project.

Phase 2: Based on the plan, you guys manage local developers, Civic Pixel, and other required contractors to develop a Drupal website and implement & customize the Open Media Project .. This phase could cost tens of thousands of dollars, depending on what kind of customization they need.

....The ideal would be to create regional programs on the OMP station level as well as the areas where our team resides. Our leadership role in the Drupal Dojo and Drupal Kata programs provide us with a large untapped talent pool (mentors, apprentices, potential staffers/biz partners).

With this thread (http://groups.drupal.org/node/22619) generating some good discussion and interest (private and public), I'd like to know what we can do to push this forward.

I just commented here regarding how a training/documentation initiative could be beneficial for programs like BTOP.

The mix of urban areas (many who would probably qualify for this program?), vertical markets you could target with an instance of OMP (film, radio, production companies, etc.), and ambitious/networking savvy types make Los Angeles a prime place to launch a regional program. Our progress with the Drupal learning initiatives (more going on than just me rambling) should certainly help an the tech side.

We have people ready to run with this... just need to figure out how the folks at OMP/Deproduction can drive this effort and ensure that resources are not an issue.

Looks like the Pasadena Community Network is looking at incorporating some or all of the elements in the Drupal Open Media project.

Yet another indicator that there's a need for a regional Open Media program in the LA/SoCal area. Setting up this type of collective was already one of my main agenda points during DrupalCampLA (http://2009.drupalcampla.com/) this weekend, so this is another good indicator of the client demand.
